Gluhwein
So we heading for a cold weekend and what better than enjoying a great spiced wine, also known as mulled wine. Gluhwein is the perfect spicy, warm alcoholic drink to enjoy next to a fire. My choice is to use a pinotage, but any other dry red wine (less expensive ones is fine here!) works well. I like using these tea glasses that I bought in Istanbul, although it’s not wine ones, normally used. I like these small glasses this way it stays warm to drink and I can just refill if I want more!
Serves 4 – 6
750 ml (1 bottle) red wine
4 whole cloves
1 stick cinnamon
1 star anise
cardamom pods, optional
3 lemon or orange slices
45 ml (3 Tbsp) light brown sugar
1. Slowly heat wine in a large saucepan, together with spices and lemon slices. Do not boil, as this will cause the alcohol to evaporate.
2. Stir in the sugar and allow to dissolve, but do not boil wine. Simmer for a few minutes, still not boiling.
3. Remove from heat and leave for a few minutes to draw, then remove spices and lemon. Pour into individual glasses and serve warm.
